Diversity In College

“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry and we must understand that all threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color,” stated Maya Angelou. Diversity is defined as the state or fact of being different. Every person in society is diverse and has their own way of showing it. With this said everyone uses their differences to contribute to their communities as well as benefiting from the diversity of others. The college community can be seen as a microcosm of American society as a whole, a vibrant environment where diverse individuals learn from each other’s diversity as well as contribute their own knowledge to people within the community. I believe that I am one of those individuals that can greatly benefit from the college environment as well as significantly contribute to it through my own diversity.
What is true in the stock market is also true in real life; it is always better to diversify. Through meeting new people with different experiences and talents as well as, cultural backgrounds than my own I can learn and experience things that I could not have had the opportunity to experience had I been surrounded by people that were just like myself. Besides learning and experiencing new things I may also gain a new outlook on others as well as the world. For example, a person may have a biased, negative opinion of a resident of Texas without having met someone actually from Texas. Although after meeting them and engaging in conversation this former biased opinion may be disposed of and a new more informed, positive opinion may be adopted in its stead. From this experience the person would now have become far less ignorant, more informed, and a better person in general. Although the list of benefits I could experience could go on and on it is time for me to express what I could contribute to the vibrant college community.
